Vital Signs For Dogs & Cats

What should they be?      How can you measure them?                                           
Normal tempature:  101-102.5 F                                         
Anything below 100 or above 103                                      
is abnormal.

Use rectal, not oral thermometers for pets.  Newer human digital thermometer are best.

Normal Heart Rates:
Dog:  70-160 beats per minute                                             
Cat:  160-240 beats per minute                                            

Heart rate can be checked by placing a hand over the animal's chest. 

Normal Respiratory Rates:
Dog:  10-30 breaths per minute                                            
Cat:  20-30 breaths per minute                                                                                                                                                              
Respiration can be measured by observing the flanks or by holding a wet finger in front of the     nostrils.
